Testimonials from my profile on Thumbtack and Yelp (average of 5.0 stars)

  • “I've been a professional musician my entire adult life, and have taken countless lessons, and taught some music lessons as well–and Jaren's teaching is as inspired and good as I've seen.  He's been teaching our 16 year old son piano and theory, and from the very first lesson he's been remarkably engaged and perceptive, meeting our boy where he's at, encouraging him and leading him deep into all facets of music.  Our son has never had a teacher that's inspired him so.  Jaren is a rare and fine talent!" - Mark M.

  • “Jaren is an exceptional teacher. He is enthusiastic and patient with my teenage daughter, who is excited to attend lessons and mostly excited to practice. Jaren is always present during weekly lessons and able to meet my daughter where she is at. It is exciting to witness progress as the weeks pass by. I am grateful.” - Cricket C.

  • “I am so glad we found Jaren.  He is a talented piano player, an excellent piano instructor. My son has attention deficit disorder. Every week Jaren comes prepared with new music, concepts, lessons for my son.  He enjoys the songs that he assigns. It helps keep him motivated and interested. Jaren shares his learning experience and is very encouraging. My son learns a new concept in each lesson. I can already see a difference from his previous piano instructor.” - Cathy L.

  • “I always look forward to my piano lessons with Jaren – he's incredibly energetic and encouraging, and does a great job adjusting the focuses of lessons to my level, my interests, and my areas for improvement. After each lesson, I have a clear direction for what to work on, and feel empowered to practice.” - Nathan W.

My music lessons have a special approach: we develop a solid foundation of musicianship and music theory, while learning pieces that you truly love and are excited to play.

“He is joyful and attentive, balancing out the French minuets and Swedish fugues with songs from Imagine Dragons and the theme tune from Super Mario Bros” - Ruth Whippman (New York Times)

I have a strong classical background, but I stand out as a teacher in the realms of contemporary songs, jazz, and improvisation. My students learn pieces that are meaningful to them, and through our musicianship work we develop skills that can be used for songwriting, performing in jazz ensembles, or accompanying their singing voice on the piano.

I teach lessons over Zoom, and in person in Brooklyn, NY. I currently have a waitlist for Sprint 2025 lessons, but will consider highly motivated students on a case-by-case basis. When emailing, please take a moment to answer the following:

  • Are you (or your child) highly motivated and looking for ongoing weekly lessons?

  • Are you or your child new to piano, or do you have a background in the instrument? (Please note I work with beginners and advanced musicians alike)

  • Are you interested primarily in Zoom lessons, or in-person lessons? If you would like lessons in your home, please note the nearby cross-streets so I can consider the travel distance.

  • Are you looking for forty-minute lessons or thirty-minute lessons?
